Dependence of egg hatching onWolbachiadensity in a parthenogenetic weevil revealed by antibiotic treatment

چکیده
Naupactini is a tribe of Neotropical broad-nosed weevils highly diverse in South America. This group includes several parthenogenetic species, some them harmful for agriculture and invasive around the world. Although hypotheses based on polyploidy hybridization have been proposed to explain origin parthenogenesis weevils, infection with bacterium Wolbachia pipientis may be involved reproduction species. In this contribution, we studied role reproductive biology Pantomorus postfasciatus Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) through curing experiment using tetracycline. weevil has mixed mode including sexual populations. Exposure an antibiotic did not affect fecundity, but reduce egg hatching comparison untreated individuals. Consequently, inferred that most probably takes part P. postfasciatus, either by exerting nutritive functions oogenesis necessary hatching, or induction thelytokous parthenogenesis. was totally cured, load significantly lower treated than control females. Thereby, hypothesize minimum threshold density required reproduction. We conclude all analyses support

Ixodes pacificus Ticks Maintain Embryogenesis and Egg Hatching after Antibiotic Treatment of Rickettsia Endosymbiont
Rickettsia is a genus of intracellular bacteria that causes a variety of diseases in humans and other mammals and associates with a diverse group of arthropods. Although Rickettsia appears to be common in ticks, most Rickettsia-tick relationships remain generally uncharacterized. The most intimate of these associations is Rickettsia species phylotype G021, a maternally and transstadially transm...
متن کاملHatching Egg Sanitation
Penetration of the hatching egg shell by microorganisms results in embryonic mortality, weak chicks, high chick mortality, and poor chick growth. The most effective sanitation system involves treating the eggs as soon as they are collected from the nest and before microorganisms penetrate the shell. Several recent research studies have examined the effectiveness, safety and ease of use of commo...
متن کاملEffect of Egg Weight on Egg Traits and Hatching Performance of Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) Eggs
The study was conducted to determine the effects of turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)egg weight on certain egg traits and hatching performance. A total of 178 turkey eggs comprising of three different egg weight groups below 60 g (G I), 61 to 69 g (G II) and above 70 g (G III) were used for this study. Average egg weight (g), egg length (cm), egg breadth (cm) and egg volume (cm3) values increased wi...
متن کاملCrocodile egg sounds signal hatching time
Crocodilians are known to vocalize within the egg shortly before hatching [1,2]. Although a possible function of these calls - inducing hatching in siblings and stimulating the adult female to open the nest - has already been suggested, it has never been experimentally tested [1-5]. Here, we present the first experimental evidence that pre-hatching calls of Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus)...
